Corfu Town, the ferry's Greek terminus, unfolds as a palimpsest of Venetian arcades, French mansions and British neoclassical facades. UNESCO protection arrived in 2007, recognising the Liston's colonnaded cafés and the twin fortresses that bookend the Old Town — the Paleo Frourio on its rocky promontory, the Neo Frourio climbing inland slopes. Beyond the capital, the island's 217 kilometres of coastline yield bays carved into limestone, hill villages clinging to olive terraces, and the Achilleion Palace, the retreat Empress Elisabeth of Austria built in 1890 and filled with statuary honouring Achilles.
